Description
The Concepción project, winner of the Ingersoll-Rand Italy Award in 1991, had the great success of resolving the dramatic water crisis in the city of Tegucigalpa, caused by unchecked urban development, in record time. A success made possible thanks to design choices aimed at maximum rapidity and ease of performance, innovative construction systems and optimal finance management.
The project comprises a RCC dam standing 67 metres tall and with a reservoir of 33 million m3, a diversion tunnel measuring 700 metres in length and with a diameter of 5 metres, a steel pipe measuring 8 kilometres in length and a water treatment plant with a capacity of 1,500 litres/sec. This system made it possible to double Tegucigalpa’s water requirement.
1991 Ingersoll-Rand Italy
The Ingersoll-Rand award is given for civil merits and design innovation. The Concepción dam stands out for the fact that it allowed the dramatic water crisis in the city of Tegucigalpa in Honduras to be resolved in record time and limited costs. The plant’s technological content is also significant given that it was one of the first to be built using RCC, a technique in the use of which Astaldi can boast considerable experience.
