Description
The turnkey construction of Line 2 of the Warsaw underground forms part of the “Infrastructures and Environment Operating Programme” promoted and funded by the EU.
In 2009, Astaldi (project leader with a 45% stake), which is able to boast consolidated experience in the construction of underground railways and major underground infrastructures in urban settings, was awarded the contract to design and perform the works as part of a joint venture with Gülermak (one of Turkey’s leading design and construction companies) and the Polish company, PBDIM (the leading construction firm in Poland).
The project will involve design and construction of the central section of Line 2 of the Warsaw underground – 6.3 kilometres of tracks featuring 7 stations between the two terminals Rondo Daszynskiego and Dworzec Wilenski. The route involves underground crossing of the River Vistula between Powisle station and Stadion station.
A large part of the route will run through Warsaw's subsoil (4.5 kilometres of tunnels split into 6 separate sections) and will consist in a pair of parallel, single-track tunnels, a design solution which will increase the new line's safety, eliminating the risk of head-on collisions between trains. The tunnels will be dug using three 6.32-metre diameter TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machine) at the same time, while construction of an additional single-track tunnel is also planned to hook up with the existing line, as well as construction of three buildings for housing and maintenance of trains.
The contract also includes wiring for the power line and supply of the railway and electromechanical superstructure.
The contract entered into with Warsaw's city authorities has a total value of PLN 3.375 billion.
